No. 14 Midwestern too much for Men's Tennis

By Ruben Dominguez | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

WICHITA FALLS, Texas —In a highly contested South Central Regional matchup, St. Mary's Men's Tennis came up short against a very strong No. 14 Midwestern State team, falling 9-0 Thursday.

The Rattlers, who are ranked No. 35 in the nation, suffered their toughest loss of the 2015 campaign to the Mustangs (12-5) of the Lone Star Conference, who hold the No. 1 ranking in the South Central Region.

A shake up in the order saw the native from Wichita Falls, Texas Adam Dockery (So.) and Brien Galon (Jr., San Antonio) play No. 1 doubles, ultimately losing to Tomas Grejtak and Ramon Toyos by a score of 8-5.

It would prove to be the closest doubles score on the day with the other two doubles matches going in favor of the home team by the same margin, 8-1.

No. 2 Michael Maciel (So., Sugar Land, Texas) and Joshua Mosseri (So., Montreal) fell to Kacper Boborykin and Kyle Davidson and the No. 3 team of Matt Banner (Jr., Mason, Texas) and Aldo Maldonado (Fr., Sierra Tarahumara, Mexico) would suffer defeat at the hands of Chris Norrie and Zack Santagate.

Things did not improve for the Rattlers as the Mustangs' dominance continued into the singles portion of play.

The No. 27 singles player in the country Boborykin would prove to be too much for StMU's No. 1 Maciel as the sophomore lost out by a score of 6-2, 7-5.

MSU boasted another ranked player with No. 30 Davidson as he defeated Adam Dockery 7-6, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. Maldonado would lose out to Toyos at No. 3 by a score of 6-3, 6-1 while Richard Foley (So., Virginia, County Cavan, Ireland) was defeated by Norrie 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4.

With the match well out of reach after Roberto Rodriguez (So., San Francisco, Panama) lost 6-2, 6-4 at No. 5 to Matt Tyer, the lone bright spot for the Rattlers came at No. 6 as Mosseri took the first set 6-4 over Keegan Sullivan, but would end up dropping the second set by the same score and ultimately losing the third set tiebreaker 10-3 to end the match between the two teams.

St. Mary's returns to action today when they travel to Lawton, Oklahoma to take on Cameron University. They will try to get back to winning ways as they sit at 5-6 on the year.
