No. 13 Baseball sweeps Newman to stay tied atop league standings

SAN ANTONIO — No. 13-ranked St. Mary's Baseball took care of business against Newman on Friday, completing the three-game sweep of the Jets with a 3-2 victory at Dickson Stadium.

The Rattlers (25-7, 13-2 in Heartland Conference) pulled ahead 2-1 in the fourth and added an insurance run in the fifth that proved to be enough with Cody Butler on the mound. Butler lasted eight innings, striking out three and allowing two runs, including just one earned, on six hits.

Cole Hybner came on in relief in the ninth and turned a 1-2-3 double play to end the game. Hybner picked up his first save of the season, while Cody Butler collected his seventh victory to improve to 7-1.

Keith Funk drove in the go-ahead run on a double down the right-field line in the fourth inning, putting the Rattlers ahead 2-1. Funk brought in Matt Smith on the play after Smith blasted a two-out triple to kick-start the rally.

An inning later, Mario Maldonado drove in Derek Hamilton on a sacrifice bunt attempt that the pitcher could not field to make it 3-1. Newman (13-18) answered back in the sixth when Lucas Norton doubled to right-center field to cut the gap to 3-2.

Shortstop Derek Hamilton, who was responsible for driving in the Rattlers' first run, finished 3 for 4 with an RBI and run scored. He got St. Mary's on the board in the third when he singled to right field to score Funk.

Newman wasted little time in taking a 1-0 lead, as leadoff hitter Jarrod Flax came around to score in a mistake-filled sequence for St. Mary's. Flax reached base on an error and advanced to second on the play, and proceeded to steal third base and score on a throwing error from home to third.

Smith finished 2 for 4 with a triple and a run scored for the Rattlers. Funk and Maldonado each had with an RBI in the victory.

The triumph sets the stage for a big "Battle of the Saints" showdown next week, which pits the Heartland Conference's top two teams against each other. St. Mary's and St. Edward's each will enter with 13-2 records in league play. The series begins with a doubleheader Friday, April 10 at Dickson Stadium.

But first, the Rattlers will entertain Texas A&M-Kingsville in a non-conference game at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Dickson Stadium.
