Men's Tennis falls in Heartland semifinals

By Ruben Dominguez | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

DALLAS — It was a disappointing defeat for the Rattlers' Men's Tennis team as they lost its opening match at the Heartland Conference tournament to Newman, 5-2.

The match, which kicked off late due to weather delays throughout the day, did not conclude until after midnight Saturday.

The Rattlers held a higher regional ranking over the Jets (14-6), but Newman was able to upset the San Antonio team on their way to the conference final.
The doubles portion went the way of Newman as it took two of three matches up for grabs.

The lone match won from St. Mary's came from Michael Maciel (So., Sugar Land, Texas) and Aldo Maldonado (Fr., Sierra Tarahumara, Mexico) as they secured the win against Freddy Sanchez and Jonas Enrique Corias 8-3 at No. 2.

Unfortunately for the Rattlers, No. 1 tem of Adam Dockery (So., Wichita Falls, Texas) and Brien Galon (Jr., San Antonio) and No. 3 team of Richard Foley (So., Virginia, Country Caven, Ireland) and Joshua Mosseri  (So., Montreal) were unable to win at their respective positions. The No.1's lost a close one, 9-7 to Eduardo Sanchez and Alejandro Gonzalez and the No. 3's losing to Evgeniy Kim and Max Pile by a score of 8-2.

Heading in to singles, the Snakes would try to get back into the contest and they looked right on track to do so as Maldonado took a three set decision over Kim, winning 6-0 in the final set to stage a comeback.

St. Mary's would lose three matches on the way to their season ending; Santos would defeat Maciel at No. 1, 6-2, 7-6, Gonzalez took the decision over Dockery with a 6-2, 6-2 victory, and Diego Rojo Fernandez took down Foley 6-3, 7-5 on the way to clinching the match.

The Rattlers now hold an overall record at 7-9 and will await a decision from the regional committee on their advancement to the South Central Region tournament as an at-large bid.
