Women's Tennis No. 1, Men No. 5 in NCAA Regional poll

SAN ANTONIO — The first NCAA regional rankings for collegiate tennis have been released and St. Mary's Women's Tennis tops the South Central Region at No. 1 and St. Mary's Men's Tennis has been ranked No. 5 in the South Central Region, it was announced this week.
 
Ranked No. 13 in the nation in the most recent ITA national rankings, St. Mary's Women's Tennis topped the South Central Region poll as the No. 1 team in the region with 13-0 overall record against Division II opponents.
 
Coming in at No. 2 in the NCAA regional poll is Midwestern State followed by Heartland Conference foes Dallas Baptist and St. Edward's at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively.
 
Rounding out the regional poll for Women's Tennis is Cameron at No. 5 and Newman at No. 6.
 
Last season, the Women's Tennis squad hosted the South Central Region 2 tournament and advanced to National Tournament for the first time in program history.
 
This season, Women's Tennis will go for its third straight Heartland title at the Heartland Conference postseason tournament, facing off with Newman in the semifinals at 9 a.m. Friday in Dallas.
 
For St. Mary's Men's Tennis, the Rattlers are ranked No. 5 in the first NCAA regional poll with a 5-5 overall record against Division II opponents.
 
Ranked No. 1 in the poll is Midwestern State followed by Western New Mexico and rival St. Edward's.
 
Cameron is ranked No. 4 in the regional poll followed by the Rattlers and Colorado Mesa and Newman at No. 6 and No. 7, respectively.
 
StMU is ranked No. 35 in the nation and last season advanced to the Heartland Conference finals and fell to rival St. Edward's.
 
Men's Tennis will look for its first-ever Heartland Conference title at the conference postseason tournament, facing off against Newman in the semifinals at 1 p.m. Friday in Dallas.
