No. 13 Rattlers outscore Newman 16-3 to take twin bill

By Robin Johnson | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — No. 13 St. Mary's Baseball soared over the Newman Jets Thursday to sweep the doubleheader, winning 11-2 and 5-1, scoring in all but four of the 16 innings played over the two games at Dickson Stadium.

The pair of victories improved the Snakes to 24-7 overall and 12-2 in Heartland Conference play.

StMU proved it came to play in its very first at-bat of the day as the Snakes scored five runs in the first inning of Game 1, completely batting through the lineup.

Mario Maldonado (Sr., Laredo, Texas) powered the five-run first inning by smacking a three-RBI double in his first appearance at the plate followed by Bryce Brandl (RS-Fr., El Campo, Texas) drawing an RBI off a fielding error and a RBI-single from Matt Smith (Jr., Austin, Texas).

The Rattlers would go on to score in every inning except in their final at-bat, ending with a blowout, 11-2 score.

Maldonado batted 1.000 in Game 1, going 3 for 3 with two runs scored and four RBIs while Jacob Marler (Jr., Helotes, Texas) and Brooks Orton (Sr., Cedar City, Utah) both scored three runs apiece in the Rattlers' 12-hit victory.

Brandl and Nathan Schwertner (Jr., Huffman, Texas) each recorded two RBIs apiece and AJ Perez (Jr., Alice, Texas) went 2 for 3 that included a big triple.

Matt McClain (Sr., San Antonio) picked up the lopsided win, improving to 6-1 on the season after six innings of work.

Victor Garza IV (Stockdale, Texas) closed out the game with one inning tossed in his second appearance on the season.

The Rattlers kept up their hot bats, scoring quickly in Game 2 with one run in both the first and second inning.

StMU would record three more one-run innings to end the game in the lead, 5-1.

Brandl highlighted the fourth inning with a big fly into the Rattlers' bullpen for his fourth home run on the season to take the team lead in homers.

The nine-hit Game 2 victory saw Perez, Derek Hamilton (RS-Sr., Lake Jackson, Texas) and Schwertner all record a pair of hits each.

Kris Gardner (Sr., Coppell, Texas) pitched six scoreless innings for the win to improve to 7-2 on the season.

Oscar Sepulveda (So., San Antonio) tossed two innings of relief before Connor Camacho (Jr., Pilot Point, Texas) threw one inning to close out the win.

The Rattlers complete the series with the Jets with a single game at Noon Friday at Dickson Stadium.
