No. 14 SEU denies No. 20 Snakes' comeback hopes in series finale

By Robin Johnson | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — The Rattlers couldn't get their comeback this time.

After a two-hour rain delay for the start of the highly anticipated series finale with No. 14 St. Edward's, No. 20 St. Mary's Baseball fell to the Hilltoppers 6-2 after missed scoring opportunities in a day that saw 10 walks from the Rattlers' pitching staff.

Thanks to the Rattlers' stunning doubleheader sweep Friday that included a 1-0 walk-off victory in 11 innings and a six run comeback to win it 9-6 in Game 2, the Snakes successfully took the series 2-1 over the Toppers to maintain sole possession as the top team in the Heartland Conference.

Three straight singles from the Snakes met the Toppers in bottom of the sixth to load the bases with one out that teased another comeback as the Rattlers trailed 5-2 but SEU turned a double play to escape the inning unscathed.

The Toppers were able to shut out the Rattlers in the final three innings to secure the win and claim one game in the "Battle of the Saints" series.

Despite the Snakes (28-8, 15-3 in conference) measuring up at the plate with SEU as both squads recorded 10 hits on the game, the Toppers took full advantage of 10 walks and four wild pitches thrown by StMU.

St. Mary's suffered a shaky first inning that saw the Toppers score two runs to take a 2-0 lead that the Rattlers sliced with an RBI-single from Derek Hamilton (RS-Sr., Lake Jackson, Texas) in the third.

After their two-run start, the Toppers were held hitless by starting pitcher Cody Butler (Sr., Baytown, Texas) until the fourth inning when a three-hit outing brought their lead to 4-1.

The Toppers added one more run in the fifth that the Rattlers matched in their at-bat with a sacrifice fly from Matt Smith (Jr., Austin, Texas) but it would be the final run StMU would score.

The sixth saw Max Heintzelman (RS-Fr., San Antonio) make the second appearance on his career as he produced an impressive showing, keeping the nationally ranked Toppers both scoreless and hitless for three complete innings.

Cole Hybner (So., Shiner, Texas) tossed the final inning of the game that charged Bulter with the loss, dropping him to 7-2 on the season.

AJ Perez (Jr., Alice, Texas) went 3 for 4 in the 10-hit loss while Hamilton and Bryce Brandl (RS-Fr., El Campo, Texas) each recorded a pair of hits each.

The Rattlers face regional contender and Lone Star Conference foe Angelo State at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Dickson Stadium.
