Errors plague No. 13 StMU to stunt thrilling comeback against ASU

By Robin Johnson | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — Angelo State had to bring in its No. 1 ace to stop the Snakes' ninth-inning rally Tuesday.

After trailing by as many as eight runs, No. 13 St. Mary's Baseball nearly came back in a blemished, 10-9 loss to the Rams with a four-run final outing in the bottom of the ninth.

But the Rams (27-12) brought out their No. 1 pitcher Steve Naemark with the tying run on third with one out to shutdown the Rattlers' comeback rally to earn his first save on the season.

After connecting for five hits in the first eight innings of the game, St. Mary's finally found the sweet spot in their final at-bat, pelting three hits for four earned runs to rattle the Rams' star closer Graylon Brown who entered the game with a impressive 0.30 ERA and just one earned run in 30 innings of work on the season.

The Rattlers' (28-9) near comeback helped to overshadow a sloppy game as both squads combined for a total of 10 errors in the field and saw a rotation of 11 pitchers between the two pitching staffs.

Starting pitcher Drew Lamont (Jr., Pinole, Calif.) was charged with the loss for the Snakes, dropping to 2-2 on the season after three innings of work against the Rams.

The Rams scored in every at-bat for the first five innings of the game until Rattler relief pitchers were able to hold ASU scoreless for three innings until their final run in the ninth inning that would turn out to be the game winner after the Rattlers suffered three straight errors.

Out shining the Rattlers at the plate until the ninth inning, the Rams totaled 15 hits for the game with their run production coming from just three players as three Rams totaled three RBIs each for the team's nine total RBIs.

The Rattlers begin to chip away at the deficit in the fourth with their first run on the game and added another in the sixth to make it a 9-2 ballgame.

The seventh saw a two-RBI homer from Bryce Brandl (RS-Fr., El Campo, Texas) for his fifth home run on the season to help close the gap to 9-4.

Going into the ninth down 10-5 after adding another run in the eighth, the Rattlers nearly shocked the Rams with a stunning comeback, scoring four runs off three hits with one ASU error.

But the damage had been done and the Rams were able to walk away from Dickson Stadium with the thrilling victory to sweep the season series, 2-0.

The Rattlers return to Heartland Conference play in a three-game series with Oklahoma Christian, opening with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Friday in Oklahoma City.
