Early homers and strong pitching from ASU holds off StMU comeback

By Robin Johnson | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANGELO, Texas — No. 13 St. Mary's Baseball couldn't overcome early homers from Angelo State Tuesday night as the Snakes fell just short of a comeback, 4-3.

A two-run shot from two-hole hitter Derek Tyner in the first gave ASU an early 2-0 lead that would grow to 3-0 after Ram Brett David smacked a solo homer as the first batter in the second.

An RBI-single from ASU in the fourth had the Rattlers staring a 4-0 deficit that they would begin to chip away at in the fifth off an RBI-double from Brooks Orton (Sr., Cedar City, Utah) and an RBI-single from AJ Perez (Jr., Alice, Texas).

Derek Hamilton (RS-Sr., Lake Jackson, Texas) made it a one run game in the seventh with his RBI-single to right but that would be the last run StMU would bring in as ASU retired six straight Rattlers in the final two innings.

Starting pitcher Garrett McKenzie (RS-Jr., Aurora, Colo.) was charged with his first loss on the season Tuesday, dropping to 2-1 after tossing 3 1/3 innings with four earned runs.

Cole Hybner (So., Shiner, Texas) took over the hill, tossing 4 2/3 scoreless innings while allowing three Ram hits.

The Rattlers outhit the Rams 8-7 but were plagued by 11 strikeouts in the lineup by a three-man pitching rotation from ASU (21-10).

Perez, Hamilton and Joe Hermsen (Sr., Overland Park, Kan.) all recorded two hits apiece with Orton and Bryce Brandl (RS-Fr., El Campo, Texas) picking up one hit apiece in the eight-hit game.

The tight loss drops the Snakes to 22-7 on the season for their third loss in four games.

StMU looks to bounce back in its three-game series with Newman starting with a doubleheader at 2 p.m. Thursday at Dickson Stadium.
