Nothing unlucky about it as StMU tops TAMUK for 13th straight win

By Ruben Dominguez | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — An impressive season continued Sunday for St. Mary's Women's Tennis as they defeated Texas A&M-Kingsville, 7-2.

The Rattlers, whose last and only loss came at the hands of Air Force back on Feb. 7, made it 13 straight wins with the victory over the Javelinas (10-10).

Jamie Lee Denton (Jr., San Angelo, Texas) and Kaylin Kruseman (Fr., Houston, Texas), who are currently ranked as the No. 20 doubles team in the country, took an 8-5 decision over Mrija Dimitrovska and Mariaxi Herrera at No. 1.

The Snakes were not as fortunate at No. 2 doubles as Felicity Delgado (Sr., Universal City, Texas) and Kerry Wiegand (Jr., San Antonio) dropped a close 9-7 decision to Nadia Grlj and Tabata Lua.

Fortunately, No. 3 Mariana Rong (Sr., Jinan, China) and Joanie Bryant (Jr., San Antonio) were able to defeat Paula Saenz and Erika Larrea 8-3 to give St. Mary's the advantage heading into singles action.

Rong got singles started off with a bang as the reigning Heartland Conference Player of the Week won, with the No. 33-ranked player in the nation winning a decisive 6-0, 6-0 match over Herrera.

Denton and Kruseman would follow suit at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. Denton would see off Grlj 6-3, 6-3 before Kruseman defeated Dimitrovska 6-3, 6-1. The lone singles loss came for No. 5 Wiegand by the same 6-3, 6-1 score line at the hands of Saenz.

With the match already decided, Delgado finished off Lua 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4 and Bryant battled in a tough three-set battle with Larrea 7-6 (3), 3-6, 10-3 to cap off yet another win for the No. 1 team in the Heartland Conference and also the South Central Region.

Coach Lisa Dausin's team improved to 14-1 on the season and will return to the courts Tuesday when they take on Our Lady of the Lake.
