Rattlers get Senior Day sweep of St. Edward's for 12th straight win

By Ruben Dominguez | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — At the moment, No. 13 St. Mary's Women's Tennis just keeps on winning – and winning big.

In a highly regarded matchup with Heartland Conference rival and fellow nationally-ranked No. 36 St. Edwards, the Rattlers made a statement to the rest of the country as they swept the Hilltoppers 9-0 Friday afternoon.

The win marked the 12th straight win for the Snakes and was also their fourth straight 9-0 victory. They also have only lost three individual matches in their last seven outings.

St. Mary's set the tone for the match early in doubles, to jump out to the early 3-0 lead.

Mariana Rong (Sr., Jinan, China) and Cristina Lopez (Jr., San Antonio) were first to put the Rattlers on the board when they defeated Brooke Hughes and Sasha Khadzhyan by a score of 8-2 in No. 1 doubles. Kerry Wiegand (Jr., San Antonio) and Felicity Delgado (Sr., Universal City, Texas) followed suit shortly thereafter with their 8-5 victory over the No. 3 team of Rafaela Haegele and Marissa Williams.

Jamie Lee Denton (Jr., San Antonio) and Kaylin Kruseman (Fr., Houston, Texas) gave their team the sweep at No. 2 when they finished off Ivana Zecevic and Chaher 8-4 heading into singles.

With the advantage, the Rattlers looked to finish the job they had started and did so, to say the least.

Last off the doubles court, but first off in singles, Kruseman and Denton won their matches at No. 4 and No. 3, respectively. Kruseman gave her team the 4-0 overall lead with her 6-1, 6-1 victory over Chaher. Denton then followed with an impressive second set to defeat Zecevic 6-4, 6-0 to clinch the match for her side.

With the match out of reach for the Hilltoppers, Rong, who was named Heartland Conference Player of the Week for the 16th time in her career this past week, proved herself deserving of the title as she took a comfortable win over the SEU No. 1 Khadzhyan 6-2, 6-3. The win also came on Senior Day, where Rong, along with Delgado, were honored for their service to the tennis program.

Tyra Timm (Fr., Johannesburg), in her first "Battle of the Saints" matchup, played her part in the victory, winning 6-2, 6-2 over Summer Biggs at No. 5 to push the overall score to 7-0. Lopez was equally as impressive as her teammates at No. 2 as she defeated Haegele 7-5, 6-3.

With the last match on court, No. 6 Wiegand battled back after losing the first set to win the match in a third-set tiebreaker 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (4), which ultimately gave the Rattlers the perfect win.

The win improves coach Lisa Dausins' team to 13-1 on the season and 3-0 in Heartland Conference play. They will return to action Sunday when they travel to Kingsville, Texas to take on the Javelinas of Texas A&M-Kingsville at 1:30 p.m.
