Sepulveda, No. 6 Rattlers take down UTPB in series finale

By Robin Johnson | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

ODESSA, Texas — Oscar Sepulveda was huge Saturday in No. 6 St. Mary's Baseball's bounce back win over Texas-Permian Basin as the closer's steady game flat lined the Falcons, 8-3.

With bases loaded and no outs in the seventh, the Falcons teased an easy comeback to the Rattlers' slim, 5-2 lead but closer Sepulveda shut in down, retiring his first two batters and escaping with an RBI-single to stump a big Falcon opportunity.

The win came off the Falcons snapping the Rattlers' 17-game winning streak in a doubleheader sweep the previous day and improved the Rattlers to 22-6 and 10-2 in Heartland Conference play.

Sepulveda (So., San Antonio) received run support in the Rattlers' final burst in the ninth with Joe Hermsen's (Sr., Overland Park, Kan.) two-RBI single. Sepulveda helped his own cause in the ninth, pelting an RBI-single for the final run of the day for the final score of 8-3 to give him his fourth save on the season.

Sepulveda's three-inning outing followed a quality start from Cody Butler (Sr., Baytown, Texas) who tossed six innings with six strikeouts and one earned run. The win improved Butler to 6-1 on the season.

The Rattlers' win saw 13 Rattler hits with Brooks Orton (Sr., Cedar City, Utah) going 3 for 5 with three runs scored and Matt Smith (Jr., Austin, Texas), Scott Jones (Sr., College Station, Texas), Hermsen and Bryce Brandl (RS-Fr., El Campo, Texas) all recording two hits apiece.

Hermsen and Jones both led with two RBIs apiece in game that saw four Rattlers swipe bags including Brandl, Orton, AJ Perez (Jr., Alice, Texas) and Smith.

The Rattlers close out their road stint to face Angelo State at 6 p.m. Tuesday in San Angelo, Texas before returning to Dickson Stadium for a three-game series with Newman starting Thursday.
