UTPB snaps No. 6 Baseball's 17-game winning streak

By Robin Johnson | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

ODESSA, Texas — Friday afternoon No. 6 St. Mary's Baseball experienced what it hasn't in a long time.

A loss.

Friday saw Texas-Permian Basin snap the Rattlers' impressive 17-game winning streak at Roden Field, winning 6-1 and 9-2, to give the Snakes back-to-back losses for the first time this season.

The stout 17-game winning streak was the program's longest since the 2011 season. Friday's Game 1 loss marked the Snake's first loss since February 14 when they fell to Tarleton State at Dickson Stadium.

The two losses drops StMU to 21-6 on the season and 9-2 in Heartland Conference play but the Rattlers still maintain the No. 1 spot in the league with a one game lead over rival St. Edward's.

Matt McClain (Sr., San Antonio) had his perfect record wiped in Game 1 as the Falcons gave the ace his first loss on the season, dropping him to 5-1 on the season. The ace struck out four and gave up four earned runs to bring his season total to six earned runs in 37 2/3 innings for a 1.43 ERA.

Showing dominance at the plate all season, the Rattler bats went cold in Odessa, Texas Friday with the Snakes recording just four hits in Game 1 and scoring their lone run in the second off a Falcon error that credited Mario Maldonado (Sr., Laredo, Texas) an RBI.

The Falcons did their damage in the third, scoring five runs off six hits and two Rattler errors and added another in the fourth for the final 6-1 score.

The Rattlers connected more in Game 2, recording seven hits but five errors plagued the Rattlers with the Falcons scoring in five innings and recording 10 hits.

AJ Perez (Jr., Alice, Texas) led at the plate, going 2 for 4 with a double and one run scored.

Kris Gardner (Sr., Coppell, Texas) was charged with loss, tossing five innings and recording two earned runs to drop him to 6-2 on the season.

The Rattlers will look to take one game away from UTPB in the three-game series with the series finale at 1 p.m. Saturday in Odessa, Texas.
