Rattlers complete flawless weekend with 9-0 sweep of CSU-Pueblo

By Ruben Dominguez | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

PUEBLO, Colo. — Winning in style was an understatement as St. Mary's Women's Tennis served up its third consecutive 9-0 victory of an impressive weekend, defeating Colorado State-Pueblo convincingly Sunday.

The No. 16 Rattlers' flawless weekend saw them win all 27 matches they competed in and also win 54 of a possible 56 sets in the process. The win Sunday also marked the 11th straight win for the Snakes.

Once again, all three doubles teams cruised to the sweep with convincing wins.

At No. 1, Mariana Rong (Sr., Jinan, China) and Cristina Lopez (Jr., San Antonio) defeated Moya and Trevithick, 8-5. Kerry Wiegand (Jr., San Antonio) and Tyra Timm (Fr., Johannesburg), who teamed up for the first time on the weekend, cruised to an 8-2 victory over Alvarez and Coy at No. 3.

Jamie Lee Denton (Jr., San Angelo, Texas) and Kaylin Kruseman (Fr., Houston, Texas) turned in the most impressive score on the day, dropping only a single game on their way to an 8-1 victory at No. 2 over Haro and Hosomi.

Like their fellow RMAC (Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) counterparts, the Thunderwolves were unable to muster up any sort of comeback as the Rattlers carried over their doubles form to the singles courts.

Rong, at her No. 1 spot, beat Moya by a score of 6-1, 6-2. At No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, Lopez and Timm lost only two games apiece on their way to victories; the first beating Hosami 6-2, 6-0 and the latter defeating Alvarez 6-1, 6-1.

Kruseman was right behind her fellow teammates posting a 6-1, 6-2 scoreline in her win over Coy at No. 4. Felicity Delgado (Sr., Universal City, Texas) came in to play the No. 6 singles spot and won 6-4, 6-3 over Trevithick.

In the closest encounter of the day, Wiegand won the first set at No. 5, 6-1, but lost the second set in a tiebreaker 6-7 (1), but rallied to win the tiebreaker and ultimately the match to preserve the perfect weekend for StMU.

After returning home from the high altitude of the Rocky Mountains, the women will resume play Thursday when they face Heartland Conference rival St. Edward's at the Rohrbach Stadium Tennis Complex at 3 p.m. Coach Lisa Dausin's team will take a 12-1 mark into the contest and will be riding an 11-match win streak as well.
