No. 16 Rattlers make it 10 straight with shutout of Colorado Mesa

By Ruben Dominguez | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

PUEBLO, Colo. — It was a perfect 10 as St. Mary's Women's Tennis extended its phenomenal win streak to 10 as they won a convincing 9-0 decision over Colorado State Mesa on Saturday.

The No. 16 Rattlers not only remained perfect on their Rocky Mountain road trip, but have also done so in style without dropping a single match and remarkably losing only one set in the process.

Like yesterday, the Snakes got out to an early lead after doubles and never looked back.

Mariana Rong (Sr., Jinan, China) and Cristina Lopez (Jr., San Antonio), who saw their first doubles action after receiving a default win in Friday's match with Metro State, did not miss a step as they went on to defeat the team of Wykert and McLaughlin 8-1 in No. 1 doubles.

The No. 2 team of Jamie Lee Denton (Jr., San Angelo, Texas) and Kaylin Kruseman (Fr., Houston, Texas) were equally impressive, winning 8-3 over their counterparts Beeston and Dodson. Felicity Delgado (Sr., Universal City, Texas) and Kerry Wiegand (Jr., San Antonio) won by the same margin at No. 3 over Martin and Kirby to complete the doubles sweep before heading into singles action.

The story in singles was much the same for StMU as they went on to complete the sweep against their Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opponent.

No. 1 Rong maintained her near flawless singles record on the year with a win over Martin, 6-1, 6-1. The freshman Kruseman nearly matched the senior's performance, winning her match at No. 4 6-1, 6-2 over Kirby.

Denton and Tyra Timm (Fr., Johannesburg), who was inserted for singles, both went on to win, dropping only three games and winning a set at love in the process. Denton at No. 3 beat McLaughlin 6-3, 6-0 and Timm at No. 5 topped Dodson 6-0, 6-3.

Lopez at No. 2 won 6-3, 6-2 over Wykert before Joanie Bryant (Jr., San Antonio), who saw her first action of the weekend, battled back from losing the first set 6-7, to win the second 6-4 before winning a third-set tiebreaker over Beeston at No. 6 to complete the victory for the St. Mary's.

The women will conclude their trip with Colorado State-Pueblo at the same venue at 11 a.m. Sunday. Coach Lisa Dausin's team now moves its record to 11-1 on the year and will look to cap off its road trip with what would be it 11th straight victory.
