Baseball unable to fight off Tarleton bats in first season loss

By Robin Johnson | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

HOUSTON — St. Mary's Baseball was unable to mount a comeback against Tarleton State Friday afternoon for its first season loss, 8-4, as the Texans rallied to score in each of the last four innings at Minute Maid Park.

The Rattlers' Cody Butler held the Texans (1-1) to five scoreless innings before TSU found the sweet spots to score eight runs in the final four innings on a Rattler rotation of four pitchers.

Butler's (Sr., Baytown, Texas) first start as a Rattler saw him retire his first 10 batters straight with four strikeouts. Butler was charged with the loss after 6.1 innings of work for a 0-1 record.

Garrett McKenzie (Sr., Aurora, Colo.), Connor Camacho (Jr., Pilot Point, Texas) and Nick Garcia (So., San Antonio) also saw the rubber at Minute Maid Park in relief of Butler.

At the plate, the Rattlers put up a 3-0 lead by the sixth, scoring two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth.

The first three runs were all RBI-singles with Matt Smith (Jr., Austin, Texas) and Joe Hermsen (Sr., Overland Park, Kan.) connecting for two runs in the fourth and Brooks Orton (Sr., Cedar City, Utah) brining in Scott Jones (Sr., College Station, Texas) in the fifth on a shot to left.

The Texans took control of the lead in the seventh and built a 7-3 cushion after scoring three runs in the eighth.

The bottom of the eighth saw the Rattlers load the bases but the Snakes were only able to convert for one run and went scoreless in their final at-bat to give the Texans (2-0) the 8-4 win.

StMU peppered nine hits for the game, competing well against a four-man Texan pitching rotation that recorded 11 strikeouts.

AJ Perez (Jr., Alice, Texas) and Mario Maldonado (Sr., Laredo, Texas) led the bats with two hits apiece in the ballclub's two multiple-hit showings with Perez recording a double and two runs scored.

The Rattlers continue the Houston Winter Invitational Saturday when they take on Winona State at 6 p.m. in Houston at Minute Maid Park.
