Orton's big day fuels @StMUbaseball to season-opening win

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

HOUSTON — Brooks Orton's craftiness on the base paths put him in the St. Mary's record book last season.

This year, it looks like he might just be content with letting his bat do all the work.

Orton opened the Rattlers' 2015 campaign Thursday by driving in five runs on a 3-for-5 effort at the plate to spark StMU to a 10-5 victory over No. 17 Arkansas Tech at the Houston Astros' Minute Maid Park.

Orton drove in runs over three separate innings, including late in the ninth inning when he snuck a two-RBI single up the middle to give the Rattlers (1-0) a comfortable five-run cushion — quite the finishing statement after StMU had watched Arkansas Tech (2-3) climb out of a 5-1 hole with a four-run inning to even things up at 5-5 in the sixth.

Newcomer catcher Nathan Schwertner drove in the go-ahead run on an RBI double to take a 6-5 lead in the sixth, a lead the Rattlers extended over each of the following two innings. Matt Smith's RBI double made it 7-5 in the eighth, and Schwertner struck again with another RBi double in the ninth to extend the lead to three.

Then came Orton's turn to bring in two more — just three innings after his two-run home run jumpstarted a three-run effort in the top of the sixth that handed the Rattlers a 5-1 advantage.

Schwertner finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs, two doubles and one run on the day. Senior second baseman Mario Maldaonado also had a big game, going 3 for 5 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Division I transfer Kris Gardner made his St. Mary's debut on the mound, striking out four over 5.2 innings — including fanning three of his first seven batters faced — to pick up his first victory on the season. Reliever Oscar Sepulveda pitched a gem in relief, giving up just one hit over 3 1/3 scoreless innings to earn the save.

The Rattlers outhit Arkansas Tech 15-7. Jacob Marler stole two bases in the game for StMU.

St. Mary's will be back in action Friday, when it battles Tarleton State at 2 p.m. from the Astros' Minute Maid Park.
