By Robin Johnson | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's Baseball saw both sides of the coin Saturday as it split its doubleheader with Tarleton State with a 3-0 pitching gem in Game 1 and a tough, 12-4 loss in Game 2.

Ace Cody Butler (Sr., Baywood, Texas) tossed StMU pitching staff's first complete game shutout on the season in Game 1 of the doubleheader, logging seven innings with three strikeouts.

Butler scattered six hits in the win while walking just one, improving his record to 1-1 on the season.

Drew Lamont (Jr., Pinole, Calif.) was charged with the loss in Game 2, falling to 1-1 on the season in a game that saw 11 pitchers rotated between TSU and StMU.

The Rattlers smacked nine hits in Game 1 with AJ Perez (Jr., Alice, Texas), Jacob Marler (Jr., Helotes, Texas), Joe Hermsen (Sr., Overland Park, Kan.) and Bryce Brandl (RS-Fr., El Campo, Texas) all picking up a pair of hits.

Perez was responsible for two of the Rattlers' three RBIs in the win, recording a sac fly in the in the third and an RBI-double in the fifth to close out the game.

Hermsen cracked open the game with an RBI-single in the second to score Matt Smith (Jr., Austin, Texas).

Brandl, who picked up his first career start in the field in Game 1, connected strong again in Game 2, going 2 for 4 with two runs scored and two RBIs with his first career home run.

Brandl blasted his two-run shot over the right field fence in the second to give the Rattlers a 2-1 advantage.

But Brandl's highlight was overshadowed as TSU (4-3) lit up to score 11 more runs throughout the game and recorded two homers of their own.

Orton and Derek Hamilton (RS-Sr., Lake Jackson, Texas) also recorded two hits in the Rattlers' nine-hit Game 2.

The Valentine's Day split put the Snakes at a 4-4 record on the season.

The Rattlers start a four-game series with the University of Mary with a single game at 4 p.m. Friday at Dickson Stadium.
