SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's Volleyball was swept in straight sets in a competitive, back-and-forth match Saturday, falling 3-0 at Bill Greehey Arena.

The Patriots (13-6, 8-3) prevailed 25-23, 25-23, 25-22 to take a tighter grip of third place in the Heartland Conference standings.

Jenna Paul had a big game for the Rattlers, racking up 11 kills to go along with a .320 hitting percentage. Tarine Grace played just as well, attacking at a .333 clip with nine kills. Freshman Channing Hankins added eight kills to go along with a team-high 15 digs, while another freshman, Maddy Walsh, led the way with 22 assists to go along with 12 digs in an impressive showing.

The day started in promising fashion for St. Mary's (5-17, 3-9), which opened up a 16-11 lead in the first set on a DBU error. But the Patriots cut away at the deficit, tying the set at 21-21 and eventually pulling away for a 25-23 victory to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

The second set was just as competitive, with St. Mary's again opening up an early lead at 15-12. DBU remain composed, however, and rallied back to ultimately lead 23-22. The Patriots held on, taking the set by the same score as the first, 25-23.

Set 3 wasn't much different, as the Rattlers led 10-6 early on. But a Patriot timeout helped quiet the storm, as DBU stuck around to even the score at 12-12 and, later, take a 15-14 lead on a hard spike from Brooke Manley.

The Rattlers battled back, however, to take a 21-19 lead. But it wasn't enough, as the Patriots scored six of the match's final seven points to win 25-22.

St. Mary's will be back in action Thursday, when the Rattlers travel to Portales, N.M., to take on Eastern New Mexico at 8 p.m.
