@StMUvolleyball nets impressive win over UTPB

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

ODESSA, Texas — St. Mary's earned a much-needed victory Saturday, thumping Texas-Permian Basin 3-0 in Heartland Conference play.

The Rattlers prevailed in straight sets, winning 25-22, 25-15, 25-23 to earn its second Heartland Conference victory of the season. StMU trails fourth-place Lubbock Christian by five games with six matches remaining, making Saturday's victory pivotal in keeping the Rattlers' playoff hopes alive with the Heartland race nearing its stretch run.

Avenging a home loss to UTPB (3-13, 2-8) from earlier in the season, St. Mary's (4-15, 2-8) used a team effort to breeze to victory. Maddi King led the squad with nine kills, followed by seven from Jenna Paul and six from Lauren Holman. Holman added two block solos and two block assists — plus four digs — in the match.

Maddy Walsh and Rachael Scicchitano each tallied 15 assists to pace the team, while Tori Estrada posted a team-best 13 digs. King added 12 digs.

St. Mary's used one of its best hitting performances of the season to tame the Falcons, as the Rattlers outhit their opponent .233-.064.

The Rattlers will return home Thursday, when they take on rival St. Edward's in a special "Battle of the Saints" at Bill Greehey Arena. StMU will honor Breast Cancer Awareness Month with its Breast Cancer Awareness match that evening. Fans are encouraged to wear pink and can make a $1 donation in the name of a loved one impacted by the disease. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
