LUBBOCK, Texas— In their first game of 2014, St. Mary's Men's Basketball defeated the Lubbock Christian Chaparrals 73-67, improving to 9-2 on the season and 2-1 in Heartland Conference play.
The first half saw the Rattlers dominate the Chaps, leading in bench points (14), points in the paint (14) and points off of turnovers (16) en route to breaking open a 43-20 lead at the break.
But the Chaps came back in the second half, outscoring the Rattlers 47-30 in the second half alone. Lubbock Christian's AJ Luckey scored a game-high 29 points, 23 of which were scored in the second half.
The Chaps forced the Rattlers to work in the last few minutes of the game, bringing the score to within six, 67-61, at the 1:30 mark.
But the Rattlers were clutch at the free-throw line, going 6 for 8 from the stripe in the final minute of the game, solidifying their six-point victory over Lubbock Christian.
Marvin Whitt (Jr., Birmingham, Ala.) and
Marvin Binney (Jr., Toronto, Ontario) both had impressive showings against the Chaps, scoring 15 and 12 points, respectively. Binney also led the team in assists with six.
Isaiah Matthews (R-Jr., Texas City, Texas) and
JJ Bolton (Jr., Beaumont, Miss.) led the team with six rebounds apiece, followed by
Justin Alexander (Jr., San Antonio) with five boards.
The Rattlers will continue on the road as they head to Odessa, Texas to take on Texas-Permian Basin at 3 p.m. Saturday.
