GOLDEN, Colo. — Battling through inclement conditions is fast becoming an expectation for the St. Mary's women's soccer team.
Having already trudged through rainstorms twice at home this season, the Lady Rattlers faced another as they hit the road Friday — this time against the No. 6-ranked team in the nation.
Lightning suspended play late in the first half, and with Colorado School of Mines extending their one-goal lead at the break in a 2-0 victory over the Rattlers.
Colorado School of Mines, ranked No. 6 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll, improved to 3-0 with the victory. St. Mary's, meanwhile, suffered its first defeat, falling to 2-1-1 on the season.
St. Mary's goalie
Alyssa Taramona (So., Forney, Texas) did her best against a strong offensive attack, facing a barrage of shots in the non-conference affair. Colorado School of Mines outshot St. Mary's 24-3, including nine shot on goal. Taramona collected six saves on the day while surrendering two goals.
Ronika Cavazos (Sr., Corpus Christi, Texas) recorded the only shot on goal for the Rattlers, misfiring in the 42nd minute of play.
Caitlin Kaltenbaugh put Colorado School of Mines up 1-0 seven minutes into the game on an unassisted goal, but the Orediggers' offense would go cold for a while, before Anna Deleray scored her first goal of the year on an unassisted attack in the 65th minute.
St. Mary's will make the second leg of a three-game road trip on Sunday, when it plays New Mexico Highlands at Colorado School of Mines' CSM Soccer Stadium in Golden, Colo.
