Rodriguez Brace Lifts Women's Soccer to 3-1 Win

SAN ANTONIO — A brace by St. Mary's University junior Anabelle Rodriguez helped lift the Women's Soccer team to a 3-1 win over Lynn University on Saturday afternoon.

Rodriguez, from San Antonio, scored the second and third goals of the day for the Rattlers (1-0-1) after freshman Kamrynn Martinez (Dallas) scored the opening goal on a free kick in the 10th minute after fellow freshman Emilee Durante (San Antonio) was fouled about 22 yards out.

Freshman Helen Lazaro (Garland, Texas) found Rodriguez on both goals, as the pair teamed up in the 37th and 40th minutes for the 3-0 lead.

Lynn answered with a goal only two minutes into the second half, but the defense was able to keep them off the scoreboard the remainder of the day, despite the Fighting Knights taking 25 total shots.

Sophomore Molly Lyons (Galveston, Texas) made a career-high eight saves, including five in the second half, while her counterpoint, Emma Brunelli from Lynn, made five saves.

Despite the heat, the Rattlers used minimal substitutions, as Nia Mendiola (Fullerton, Calif.), Lauren Mueller (San Antonio), Martinez, Michelle Ramirez (Helotes, Texas), Victoria Morales (Kaufman, Texas) and Gracie Van Sluis (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) all played the entire 90 minutes.

The Rattlers head out on a long road trip, beginning with New Mexico Highlands on Thursday, Sept. 3. The team returns home to host UT Permian Basin on Sept. 12 at 7:30 p.m.
