SAN ANTONIO — All series carry weight for St. Mary's Baseball, especially Heartland Conference series. But its series this weekend carries a little more as it holds a potentially historic milestone for head coach
Charlie Migl as he approaches his 1,000th career win.
Few have achieved what Migl is on the verge of — 10, to be exact. Just three wins away from becoming the 11th NCAA Division II baseball coach to reach 1,000 wins, a sweep this weekend against Texas-Permian Basin would give Migl the ticket into the 1,000 club. Currently, Migl is the fourth winningest active coach in Division II baseball after 26-plus seasons with the Rattlers.
Migl's Rattlers this season are holding the No. 1 rank in the Heartland Conference and the South Central Region, and are ranked No. 5 in the nation in the NCBWA poll with their 22-10 overall record and 18-5 league record. With a bulk of the season remaining and an anticipated extended postseason, Migl has the potential to keep climbing the list of all-time winningest coaches this season and beyond.
Tommy Thomas of Valdosta State currently is the Division II all-time wins leader with 1,308 wins in his 40 seasons. Migl, in his 27th year as St. Mary's head coach, is 997-444.
Migl's historic weekend starts with a doubleheader against UTPB at 1 p.m. Saturday at San Antonio ISD Sports Complex. Should the Rattlers walk away with two wins, Win No. 1,000 could potentially take place at 1 p.m. Sunday.
