No. 5 Baseball suffers third straight defeat

OKLAHOMA CITY — The No. 5 St. Mary's Rattlers baseball team dropped its third straight game Thursday, losing to Oklahoma Christian University, 5-3.

The Rattlers picked up one run in the first but the close game was ultimately decided by a three-run homer from the Eagles in the their first inning of at-bats.

St. Mary's picked up a run in the third with a solo home run from Derek Moczygemba (Sr., Bulverde, Texas) to bring it to within one, 3-2, but the Eagles (16-10) would go on to score two more in the fourth.

St. Mary's had the looks of a comeback in the ninth, picking up two hits including an RBI-single from Luke Garza (RS-Jr., Corpus Christi, Texas). But the Rattlers ran out of time before the final out.

The Rattlers' (17-9) loss Thursday marks their eighth out of nine losses to be decided by two or fewer runs this season.

Nathan Humpal (Jr., Corpus Christi, Texas) recorded the loss, dropping to 1-1 on the season in 3 2/3 innings. He struck out five. Rick Villa (RS-Jr., San Antonio) finished the game, tossing 4 1/3 innings for three strikeouts.

The Rattlers start the second round of Heartland Conference play with a three-game series against Newman University, starting with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Friday in Wichita, Kan.
