No. 48 Women's Tennis sweeps Newman

Joanie Bryant's Rattlers blanked Newman in Heartland Conference action.
SAN ANTONIO — The No. 48 St. Mary's women's tennis team extended its winning streak to seven matches Monday, sweeping every match against Heartland Conference rival Newman University for a final score of 9-0.

The Lady Rattlers swept the doubles in commanding fashion. At the top doubles position, Mariana Rong and Ariana Saldana rolled their opponents en route to a 8-1 victory. At the No. 2 and No. 3 positions, the Rattlers picked up victories with identical scores of 8-3 in both matches.

At the top singles spot, No. 28 Mariana Rong stayed unbeaten, taking her match in straight sets over Newman's top player Kirstie Symon 6-3, 6-2.

In a battle at the No. 2 position, Felicity Delgado won the first set 6-1 and dropped the second set 4-6, but regained the momentum and took a 6-1 victory in the third over Newman's Lisa Pleskan for a final score of 6-1, 4-6, 6-1.

At positions three through six, the St. Mary's women proved superior, winning each match in straight sets. This is the fifth time this season the Lady Rattlers have swept their opponents in each match for a 9-0 victory

“It is always good to win at every spot,” said St. Mary's head coach Lisa Dausin. “We've got some tough matches coming up so we are not celebrating too long”

St. Mary's women's tennis moves to 10-3 on the season. The Lady Rattlers next will face nationally ranked No. 22 Drury University at the St. Mary's Tennis Courts at 1 p.m. Wednesday.
