SAN ANGELO, Texas — St. Mary's
Crystal Keller pitched a five-strikeout no-hitter in a 12-0 victory over Colorado State-Pueblo on Saturday, putting forth the sort of performance that tends to automatically own a headline.
Until her pitching mate
Vianna Gutierrez went out and no-hit the No. 4 team in the nation in a 14-0 shutout of Angelo State hours later.
Sharing Saturday's headlines for the Rattlers (11-4), Keller (Sr., LaCoste, Texas) and Gutierrez (So., San Antonio) teamed to pitch the 23rd and 24th known no-hitters in St. Mary's history — on the same day, no less — and the fourth and fifth since the 2011 season.
In fact, with the duo's spectacular performances to close out Angelo State's George McCorkle Classic, every St. Mary's pitcher now has a collegiate no-hitter to her name. Marciela Bissaro (Jr., San Antonio) tossed a no-no as a freshman in 2011, while
Emily Brittain (Jr., Corpus Christi, Texas) threw two no-hitters, including a perfect game, last season.
Gutierrez struck out three in her no-hitter, as both she and Keller won five-inning contests that were shortened due to the run-rule.
Totaling 26 runs over two games will certainly enact the run-rule.
First baseman
Jared Gonzalez (Sr., San Antonio) drove in three and scored two runs in the win over Colorado State-Pueblo on a 2-for-3 day that included a home run, while second baseman
Amanda Villa (So., San Antonio) also drove in three runs.
Against Angelo State, Gutierrez helped her cause at the plate, driving in three runs, as did centerfielder
Hannah Fields (Fr., San Antonio). Right fielder
Shelly Lee Zawadzki (Sr., San Antonio) totaled four RBIs over the two games, while left fielder
Taylor Vidrine (So., San Antonio) doubled against Angelo State and scored three runs.
Now riding an impressive five-game win streak, the red-hot Rattlers will return to action Wednesday, when they'll play a doubleheader at Texas A&M-Kingsville beginning at 5 p.m.
