Box Score
LUBBOCK, Texas — St. Mary's Women's Soccer was just short in remaining undefeated in Heartland Conference play but was unable to take Lubbock Christian to defeat Saturday, falling 3-2.
Brianna Shafer (So., San Antonio) and
Leah Snelson (Sr., Dallas) netted the Rattlers' two goals Saturday at LCU Soccer Field, which were each their third on the season.
All five goals scored in the match were netted in the first frame with the Chaps striking first. Emily Odom netted the game's first goal less than seven minutes into the game with Shafer making a statement response, scoring just 13 seconds later to tie it up, 1-1.
The Chaps then netted in the 32
nd minute and 38
th minute. Snelson then responded with a strike three minutes before the half assisted by
Karly Moe (So., Wadsworth, Ill.) to bring the Rattlers within one, 3-2.
But the scoring would stop there for both teams with the Rattlers in the deficit to drop to 5-5-1 on the season and 2-1 in conference play. The Chaps became .500 with the win for a 5-5 record and a 2-0 league record.
St. Mary's remains No. 2 in league standings under St. Edward's, which continues to hold an undefeated record. Although Lubbock Christian is statistically the No. 2 team in the Heartland, as a provisional conference member it is not eligible for postseason play, which currently makes the Rattlers hold the No. 2 seed for the postseason tournament.
The Rattlers were precise on the field against LCU, recording over a 50 percent shot on goal percentage with eight of their 15 shots being on target. For the Chaps, nine of their 19 total shots were shot on goal.
Snelson led in looks with three shots with one shot on goal followed by
Kristal Williams (Fr., Ponder, Texas) with two shots, both of which were shot on goal. Snelson and Williams were the only Rattlers with a multiple-shot game as 10 different Rattlers recorded the other 10 shots on the day.
Goalie
Alyssa Taramona (So., Forney, Texas) defended well for six saves, allowing three goals to end with a 5-5 record.
The Rattlers have a quick chance to redeem their conference loss, facing Texas-Permian Basin at 2:30 p.m. Monday in Odessa, Texas.
