Four Freshmen Score Four Goals for Women's Soccer

LAS VEGAS, N.M. — After trading goals in the first half, the St. Mary's University Women's Soccer team buckled down defensively in the second half to keep New Mexico Highlands off the scoreboard, while finding the back of the net twice for a 4-2 victory in its first road game of the year.
 
All four goals were scored by freshmen, believed to be the first time in school history that four different freshmen scored in the same contest. The Rattlers are now 2-0-1 on the season.
 
Helen Lazaro (Garland, Texas) scored the first equalizer in the 19th minute, after the Cowgirls (0-2-1) punched in the first goal in the 14th minute. Kamrynn Martinez (Dallas), who has scored in each of her first three collegiate games, gave the Rattlers a 2-1 lead in the 28th minute, scoring off a pass from fellow freshman Nia Mendiola (Fullerton, Calif.). NMHU tied the score right before halftime for a 2-2 tally at the break.
 
Martinez found Emilee Durante (San Antonio) in the 54th minute for the game-winning goal, and Victoria Morales took a ball from Durante to put the game out of reach in the 82nd minute for the team's second-straight victory. Morales also added an assist on Lazaro's goal for three points on the afternoon.
 
St. Mary's dominated the time of possession, taking 26 shots compared to 10 for NMHU. Sophomore Molly Lyons (Galveston, Texas) made five saves, while freshman Callie Gilliam (Lake Jackson, Texas) was in goal for the final four minutes without seeing a shot on goal.
 
The Rattlers posted nine shots on goal in the second half, and 13 for the contest, and they took eight of the 10 corners in the game, with four in each half.
 
The game was moved to Roosevelt HS in Las Vegas, and the earlier time didn't affect the Rattlers, who now head to Golden, Colo., to take on Colorado School of Mines. The Orediggers host Angelo State on Thursday evening. 
 
News & Notes:
  • Kamrynn Martinez took a game- and career-high nine shots, with six coming on goal. She has scored once in each of the Rattlers first three games of the year.
  • All four goals and four assists were by freshmen, with Durante, Martinez and Morales each scoring three points.
  • St. Mary's is now 17-16-15 in games under Kevin Driggs when tied at halftime. The Rattlers are now 2-0 when leading or tied after 45 minutes.
  • Helen Lazaro leads the team with three assists, averaging 1.00 per game.
