SAN ANTONIO — A late penalty kick by St. Mary's University freshman Kamrynn Martinez knotted the score and earned the Women's Soccer team a 1-1 draw against rival St. Edward's on Saturday night at Sigma Beta Chi Field.
 
Martinez (Dallas) took the penalty kick for the Rattlers (5-3-2, 3-2-1) after she was fouled from behind in the box on a breakaway attempt. Sophomore Kamora Hall (Frisco, Texas) regained possession of the ball near midfield and made a beautiful pass to Martinez with less than four minutes remaining in the contest when the foul occurred. Martinez drilled the ball into the lower right corner of the net to even the tally.
 
The Hilltoppers (1-5-3, 1-2-2) scored in the 14th minute as Rainey Simmons found Isabella Ruiz for her first goal of the season. St. Edward's outshot the Rattlers 5-to-4 in the first half, but St. Mary's came out more aggressively in the second half, getting 11 shots compared to seven for the Hilltoppers. 
 
The goal for Martinez is her eighth of the season, which is second in the Lone Star Conference behind Ashley Washburn from DBU (9), and brings her within three of the St. Mary's record for freshman goals in a season. Kaitie Kasperitis scored 11 as a first-year player in 2011.
 
St. Mary's remains at home, hosting West Texas A&M on Wednesday at 7 p.m. before traveling to Oklahoma Christian for a Saturday afternoon tilt with the Eagles. The Lady Buffs had a scoreless draw at Sul Ross State on Saturday.
