Women's Soccer Remains Unbeatean in LSC Action

SAN ANTONIO — Diaper dandies. Freshmen phenoms. Whatever you want to call them, the freshmen class for the St. Mary's University Women's Soccer team continues to shine, as first-year student-athletes scored all four goals and recorded four of the five assists in the Rattlers' 4-2 victory over UT Dallas in Lone Star Conference action on Wednesday night.
 
Freshman Helen Lazaro (Garland, Texas) and freshman Kamrynn Martinez (Dallas) each scored a pair of goals, bringing their season totals to seven goals each, while Martinez, junior Anabelle Rodriguez (San Antonio), freshman Emilee Durante (San Antonio), junior Isabella Salas (Claremont, Calif.) and freshman Victoria Morales (Kaufman, Texas) each recorded an assist to bring the Rattlers to 5-1-1 on the year and 3-0 in LSC play.
 
The Rattlers got the scoring started in the 30th minute, as Martinez stole the ball in the Rattlers' half of the field, lobbed it to Lazaro, who drove into the middle of the box and scored into the lower right corner with her left foot for the 1-0 lead.
 
The Comets (5-1-1, 1-1-1) evened the score in the 49th minute when Maya Walker found Gabby Thompson in the box.
 
In the 67th minute, Durante took the pass off a corner and placed it on the far side of the goal, where Rodriguez sent it into the middle of the box for Martinez and the 2-1 advantage. Less than a minute later, Lazaro stole a UTD pass and drove to the box for her second goal of the evening.
 
The Comets got a goal back on a terrific corner that Jules Chavez passed to Kira Schkade on the back side of the net for the 3-2 score in the 77th minute.
 
In the 81st minute, Morales made a great pass down the sideline to Salas, who found Martinez for her second goal and the 4-2 final score.
 
Junior goalkeeper Molly Lyons (Galveston, Texas) made three saves, while UTD keeper Melyna Martinez made five saves. The Comets outshot the Rattlers 18-to-13, with them taking 12 shots in the first half, and they had four of the five corners in the game.
 
The Rattlers continue Lone Star Conference play on Saturday at No. 3 DBU. The Patriots defeated Angelo State 3-1 in San Angelo on Wednesday.
