LUBBOCK, Texas — Despite high winds in the Lubbock area, the St. Mary's University Women's Tennis team was able to defeat Colorado Mesa on Saturday morning to win the 100th match of
Bill Macom's St. Mary's career.
"Colorado Mesa played us very tough, and the final score doesn't indicate how close the match really was," said Macom. "We were fortunate to pull out a couple of three-set wins and get a late service break in each set at number three singles to cruise to the win."
Freshman
Isabella Olsson (Sverige, Sweden) and junior
Selina Wu (San Gabriel, Calif.) got the action started for the Rattlers (5-5) with a 6-2 win at number two doubles. The Mavericks (7-8) evened things up with a 6-3 win at line three.
The tandem of seniors
Gia Posito (Houston) and
Alessia Terlizzi (Andria, Italy), ranked 39th nationally this week, secured the doubles point for the Rattlers with a 6-4 win at number one.
Terlizzi, who is ranked 61st in singles, dropped only one game each set, while junior
Janel Ospanova (Karaganda, Kazakhstan) won 6-4, 6-4 at three singles and Wu clinched the team victory with her 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 win on court two.
Posito won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2 at line five, and Olsson bounced back after a tough first set 6-1 loss with 6-3, 7-5 scores in the next two sets to put the Rattlers up 6-0. Mesa recorded its lone win with a long 3-6, 6-3, 11-9 battle at number six as Jane Steur knocked off freshman
Breeze Simon (Dallas).
The Rattlers return to Rohrbach Tennis Stadium to host Swarthmore on Tuesday at 3 p.m. and Lamar on Wednesday at 1 p.m.
