SAN ANTONIO — After dropping two of the three doubles sets with late breaks of serve by NCAA Division III No. 21 Swarthmore, the St. Mary's University Women's team focused in for singles play to get the 4-3 win on Tuesday evening at Rohrbach Tennis Stadium.
The Rattlers (6-5) won all four singles matches in straight sets, including a dominant 6-1, 6-1 win at number two by junior
Selina Wu (San Gabriel, Calif.).
"I think the women underestimated this team during the doubles, and we played not to lose at one and number three, which put us in a difficult position leading into the singles," said Director of Tennis
Bill Macom. "Fortunately, we were able to put more shots in play during the singles to scrape by with a win."
Also winning for the Rattlers were senior
Alessia Terlizzi (Andria, Italy) with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 victory at number one, freshman
Isabella Olsson (Sverige, Sweden) at number four (6-4, 6-3) and senior
Gia Posito (Houston) at number five (6-3, 6-2).
The win is the second straight for the Rattlers, and they have one final non-conference matchup before turning their attention to the always tough Lone Star Conference. StMU welcomes DI opponent Lamar to Rohrbach Tennis Stadium on Wednesday for a 1 p.m. match.
