8 St. Mary's turned eight double plays in the four games against Angelo State last week, including a school record six in the series finale on Sunday. The Rattlers now have 14 double plays this season to rank 27th in the nation.
9 Junior Ashton Beaird has drawn at least one walk in the last nine games and leads the team in both base on balls (17) and hit by pitch (11) this season for an on-base percentage of .532.
4.41 The Rattlers lead the league in fewest walks allowed per nine innings with 4.41, tied with Texas A&M Kingsville. The two teams are 61st in the nation .
Week Six: The St. Mary's Baseball team heads out on the road for an adjusted four-game series at Texas A&M International. Due to forecasted storms in south Texas, the two teams will now play a doubleheader on both Friday and Saturday starting at noon. Game one each day will be a seven-inning, followed by a nine-inning affair.
Quality Start: Senior Eric Tenery recorded the first quality start of the season for the Rattlers on Sunday against Angelo State. Tenery pitched six innings, allowing only one run on six hits with one walk and a season-high tying six strikeouts. Tenery has struck out at least five batters in all five starts this season and has only allowed four extra base hits of the 31.
Take Your Base: Both juniors Ashton Beaird and Dillon Lopez have reached base safely in 17 straight games this season. Beaird has drawn at least one walk in nine straight contests, while Lopez is second on the team with 20 hits. Senior Jacob King had a 22-game reached base safely streak snapped on Sunday for the longest streak of any of the active players at St. Mary's.
Swiper, No Swiping: Junior catcher Dillon Lopez has now thrown out eight base runners attempting to steal this season. The Rattlers have caught 14 runners on the base paths in 2026.
Made to be Broken: St. Mary's turned six double plays in the second game of the doubleheader on Saturday, breaking the school record of four, done 10 times in St. Mary's history. The last time the Rattlers turned four was in 2023 against Angelo State. St. Mary's has now turned 14 double plays this season, which is the third-most in the Lone Star Conference and 27th in the nation.
Friday Night Lights: Junior Brandon Vasquez struck out a career-high six batters in the opening game against Angelo State on Friday. Vasquez gave up only three hits with three walks in five innings of work, and all three hits were singles.
League Leaders: St. Mary's leads the Lone Star Conference statistics in strikeout-to-walk ratio (2.11), strikeouts per nine innings (9.3), triple plays (1) and walks allowed per nine innings (4.41). The team is also second in the LSC in base on balls (118), home runs (18), and are third in double plays (14), W/L percentage (.667).
Gauna and Done It: Senior Kaleb Gauna currently leads the nation in games started with six. He is one of six players in the nation with six starts under his belt and is 0-1 with a 4.15 ERA.
Cooking With Gas: Junior left-hander Gabe Cook is tied for eight in the nation with three saves, which is tied for the lead in the Lone Star Conference with two other pitchers. He is 3 2/3 innings shy of qualifying for the remainder of the LSC and NCAA pitching statistics.
Brooks Knows Ball: One week after earning both Lone Star and NCBWA South Central Region Hitter of the Week honors, senior 1B/RF Garrett Brooks tied the school single game record for walks in a game with four. Brooks becomes the 13th Rattler in school history to be walked four times, joining Dillon Lopez on the active list, as he drew four base on balls in the LSC Tournament against St. Edward's last season.
What An Honor: 1B/RF Garrett Brooks was named both the Lone Star Conference and NCBWA South Central Region Hitter of the Week in week one. Brooks hit .444 for the three-game series at Sul Ross State, going 8-for-18 at the plate with four home runs, scoring eight times and collecting 12 RBIs. The senior also walked once and had 13 chances in the field without making an error. It is his second weekly award for both and the first since Feb. 2024.
Batting Around: In the third inning of game three at Sul Ross State, the Rattlers exploded for 14 runs on 12 hits. Shockingly, the 14 runs in one inning is not a school record as the 2007 team put up 15 runs in the second inning at Oklahoma Panhandle State on March 2 in a 39-8 victory.
Triple Play: St. Mary's is one of two teams in the nation to have turned a triple play this season. In the eighth inning of game two and runners on first and second base, Raithen Malone snagged a line drive, threw to Blake Allen at second, and he tossed the ball to Garrett Brooks at first, catching both runners off the bags.
Tie Goes to the Runner: In addition to getting plunked six times in the series at Sul Ross State, Ashton Beaird also tied the school record for stolen bases in a game, swiping three in game two. He is the 10th different Rattler to steal three bases, and the first since Tristan Moreno did so last season.
They're Smart Too: The LSC recently released the Commissioner's Honor Roll for the fall semester, and 22 baseball student-athletes were honored, including Daniel Vogt who posted a perfect 4.00 GPA in the fall semester. The other players who were a 3.30 or better were Ryan Alaniz, Blake Allen, Chase Bright, Garrett Brooks, Braeden Brown, Miguel Bustamante, Kieffer Doxey, Brandon Ermis, Kaleb Gauna, Rob Gonzalez, Matthew Janecek, Jacob King, Dillon Lopez, Derek Maples, Matt Mendez, Edward Mendoza, Christian Molinar, Tristan Moreno, Jimmy Mowles, Brant Stringer, and Brandon Vasquez.
