SILVER CITY, N.M. — In the final non-conference match of the season, the St. Mary's University Men's Tennis team won a 4-1 contest at Western New Mexico, playing a clinch format.
The Mustangs (5-5) won the doubles point, winning at line one and two, before the team of
Lucas Castillo Sanchez (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) and
Victor Velter (Perpignan, France) for the Rattlers (11-3) won on court three, 6-3.
Junior
Leonardo Fabbri (Faenza, Italy) only dropped one game, winning 6-0, 6-1 on court two to knot the match at 1-1.
Senior
Aaron Ben Anton (Remseck, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany) also won in straight sets, defeating Djamel-Dine Bey 6-4, 6-3 on court five.
Freshman
Nikita Gavrilonoks (Riga, Latvia) needed a tiebreaker in the first set, but won his second-straight match with a 7-6 (9-7), 6-4 win on court four.
Castillo Sanchez clinched the victory for the Rattlers, coming from behind after dropping the first set 6-3 to Jack Semper, winning 6-3, 6-2 in the next two sets for the team's 11th victory of the year and a 10-2 record in the non-conference season.
The two teams return to the courts on Saturday for a conference showdown. First serve is slated for 1 p.m.
