SILVER CITY, N.M. — The St. Mary's University Men's Tennis team dug deep after losing the doubles point for the second-straight day to win 4-3 at Western New Mexico on Saturday afternoon.
"It's not easy to beat a conference team on the road," said Director of Tennis
Bill Macom. "Let alone the same team twice, especially without winning the doubles point. We did a good job keeping our composure with a pretty rowdy crowd as well."
After going down 1-0 with the Mustangs' (5-6, 1-1) doubles teams winning on court one and two, sophomore
Lucas Castillo Sanchez (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) evened things with a quick 6-3, 6-1 victory at line one, defeating Jack Semper for the second day in a row.
The Mustangs regained the lead with a straight-sets win by Yannik Rogulski at line three, but minutes later, freshman
Diego Alvarez (Santa Cruz, Bolivia) tied things up again with his 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) victory at number four.
Senior
Aaron Ben Anton (Remseck, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany) gave the Rattlers (12-3, 2-1) their first lead of the day with his 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) win on court five.
Sophomore
Lincoln Baldonado (Glendale, Ariz.) bounced back after dropping the first set 6-2 to win the second set 6-3 and battled tough with David Guta at line six, but Guta was able to pull off an 8-6 win in the third set tiebreaker to put all eyes on court two.
Junior
Leonardo Fabbri (Faenza, Italy) lost the first set in a tiebreaker, 7-5, but buckled down to win the next two sets 6-2 and 6-3 to give the Rattlers their second conference win and a sweep over the first leg of their road trip.
St. Mary's continues the road trip after a week off, heading to Lubbock Christian on April 9 at 10 a.m. and UT Permian Basin on April 11 at 11 a.m.
