Women's Tennis Pitches Shutout Against Sul Ross State

ALPINE, Texas — The St. Mary's University Women's team made quick work in winning its second-straight Lone Star Conference match with a 7-0 victory at Sul Ross State on Wednesday afternoon.

The Rattlers improved to 8-6 overall and 2-0 in LSC action with the win, while the Lobos fell to 0-4 overall and 0-2 in league play.

Both the number two and three doubles teams pitched a shutout, while the No. 32-ranked tandem of seniors Gia Posito (Houston) and Alessia Terlizzi (Andria, Italy) won 6-1.

Junior Janel Ospanova (Karaganda, Kazakhstan) got the scoring started in singles with her double bagel win on court two, while freshman Isabella Olsson (Sverige, Sweden) and Terlizzi won by the same 6-0, 6-0 scores, finishing almost simultaneously to clinch the team win for the Rattlers.

Posito took the court after Ospanova finished, but kept the momentum rolling with her shutout at line four. The freshmen duo of Breeze Simon (Dallas) at line six and Sarah Wooten (Beaumont, Texas) at number five also won without dropping a game for the 7-0 sweep.

The Rattlers remain on the road, heading to Silver City, N.M., to take on Western New Mexico on both Friday and Saturday. Friday's match will be the final non-conference match of the season, while Saturday will count toward the LSC standings. Both are slated to start at 9 a.m. at the WNMU Tennis Courts.
