SILVER CITY, N.M. — The St. Mary's University Women's Tennis team extended its winning streak to three with a 7-0 non-conference sweep over Western New Mexico on Friday, March 27.
It is also the second-straight sweep for the Rattlers as they improve to 9-6 on the year, while the Mustangs drop to 4-6 overall.
Both the number one and two doubles teams of
Gia Posito (Houston) and
Alessia Terlizzi (Andria, Italy) and
Janel Ospanova (Karaganda, Kazakhstan) and
Selina Wu (San Gabriel, Calif.) won by identical scores of 6-2 to give the doubles point to the Gold & Blue. The number three team won via forfeit.
Freshman
Breeze Simon (Dallas) pushed the lead to 2-0 with a default win at number six singles.
Posito dropped only one game in her 6-0, 6-1 victory on court four, and freshman
Isabella Olsson (Sverige, Sweden) flipped her set scores for a 6-1, 6-0 win at line three to clinch the team win for StMU.
Terlizzi won 6-2, 6-2 on court one over Josefina Bailetti, while freshman
Sarah Wooten (Beaumont, Texas) won 6-2, 6-4 for the straight sets win at line five. Wu closed out the match with a hard-fought match that went to a tiebreaker in each of the first two sets, and Wu edged out Eva Guta with a 12-10 third-set doubles tiebreaker.
The Rattlers and Mustangs return to the WNMU Tennis Courts on Saturday at 9 a.m. for a conference match.
