Softball Vanquished in Doubleheader With Patriots

SAN ANTONIO — The St. Mary's University Softball team dropped a doubleheader to two-time defending National Champions UT Tyler on Sunday at The Park at StMU, losing 7-4 and 9-1.
 
The Rattlers move to 18-15 overall and 10-10 in Lone Star Conference play, while the Patriots improve to 25-7 on the year and 17-3 in LSC action.
 
The Oklahoma teams are up next on the Rattlers' docket, as they face No. 12 Oklahoma Christian on Friday and Cameron on Sunday. The Eagles split a series at Western New Mexico on Sunday, while the Aggies swept Sul Ross State.
 
GAME ONE RECAP
St. Mary's scored its four runs on nine hits in the first game and attempted to complete the comeback, plating three runs in the bottom of the seventh, but came up short. 
 
Junior Bryley Westfahl (San Antonio) was 3-for-4, scoring twice, while junior Gabriela Banda (San Antonio) was 2-for-4 with three RBI. Sophomore Miah Corona (Eddy, Texas) was 1-for-2 with two walks and made nine putouts on defense.
 
Senior Ariella Saenz (Pharr, Texas) surrendered three runs on eight hits with one walk and one strikeout in five innings of work, while junior Emery Aguilar (Georgetown, Texas) gave up three earned runs on three hits with two walks and two strikeouts in two innings in the circle. 
 
GAME TWO RECAP
The Rattlers scored one run in the first inning but were unable to mount a rally the rest of the way, falling 9-1 in five innings.
 
The four StMU hits were scattered among four hitters, while Banda drove in junior Iliana Melendez (Seabrook, Texas) for her 31st RBI of the year.
 
Senior Emily Ayala (San Antonio) took the loss in the circle, giving up two earned runs on six hits in two innings, while Saenz, Breanna Ford (Corpus Christi, Texas) and Aly Garcia (Edinburg, Texas) all pitched in relief.
