SAN ANTONIO — The St. Mary's University Women's Tennis team began its defense of the 2025 Lone Star Conference regular season title with a 5-2 victory over Cameron on Sunday morning.
After several straight breaks of serve by both teams on court one, the Rattlers' (7-6, 1-0) pair of
Alessia Terlizzi (Andria, Italy) and
Gia Posito (Houston) held when it mattered most, at 6-5, to give the Gold and Blue a clean sweep of the doubles point after the number two team of
Janel Ospanova (Karaganda, Kazakhstan) and
Selina Wu (San Gabriel, Calif.) won 6-2 at number two and the freshman pairing of
Isabella Olsson (Sverige, Sweden) and
Sarah Wooten (Beaumont, Texas) won 6-3 at number three.
Cameron tied the match at 1-1 with a 6-1, 6-1 win by Daniela Maldonado at line six, but the Rattlers won the next three points, clinching the team victory with a 6-2, 6-4 decision on court two by Wu. It is the fourth consecutive victory for the junior, as she improves to 11-2 on the year. Ospanova (line 3) and Posito (line 5) also won quickly in straight sets.
Olsson bounced back in the second set after dropping the first one 6-2, for a 6-3 set win, but Isabella Quintero won the 10-set tiebreaker, 10-3, for the second point for the Aggies (3-4, 0-1).
On court one, Terlizzi lost the first set 6-1 but buckled down for the 6-2, 6-4 win. Jenna Goessel led 3-2 in the final set, but Terlizzi won four of the final five games to win her fourth straight singles match.
The Rattlers will play their next three matches on the road, taking on Sul Ross State on Wednesday at 2 p.m., and they'll play Western New Mexico twice in Silver City, playing a non-conference game on Friday and the conference tilt on Saturday. Both are slated to begin at 9 a.m.
