SAN ANTONIO — The St. Mary's University Men's Tennis team fought tough in the Lone Star Conference opener on Sunday, but lost a 5-2 decision to No. 37 Cameron at the Rohrbach Tennis Stadium.
The Aggies (6-2, 1-0) won the doubles point, but it wasn't always easy, as the number three St. Mary's (9-3, 0-1) team of
Lucas Castillo Sanchez (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) and
Victor Velter (Perpignan, France) tied things at 1-1 with a 6-4 decision, and the number two team of
Louis Hein (Hamburg, Germany) and
Fabian Rosales (Hollywood, Fla.) were knotted at 5-5 before the Aggies won 7-5.
Senior
Aaron Ben Anton (Remseck, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany) and junior
Leonardo Fabbri (Faenza, Italy) both won 10-set tiebreakers in the third set after the Aggies had clinched the team win, winning in straight sets on the other four courts.
Fabbri's win was over the 73rd-ranked player in Division II, Noe Milliard. It is the Rattlers' first win over a nationally-ranked singles player in 2026.
St. Mary's begins a five-match road trip on March 25 at Sul Ross State at 2 p.m. The Rattlers will also travel to Western New Mexico for two matches, Lubbock Christian and UT Permian Basin before returning home.
