SAN ANTONIO — The pitching staff for the St. Mary's University Baseball team on Sunday put on a stellar performance in the series finale against Oklahoma Christian, leading the Rattlers to a 9-1 record to keep the undefeated streak intact.
St. Mary's is now 6-0 after sweeping the first two weeks, and it is the first time since 2009 that the Rattlers have started a season 6-0. That team went on to finish 36-17. The school record for consecutive wins to begin a year is seven by the 1947 team, which finished 13-3.
Junior left-handed pitcher
Eric Tenery (Kerrville, Texas) improved to 2-0 on the season after allowing only two hits in five innings. He walked two and struck out six. Junior
Braeden Brown (Sinton, Texas) gave up the lone run on two hits with one strikeout in one inning of work, and junior
Gabe Cook (San Antonio) struck out three and surrendered only one hit in pitching the final three innings for his second save in 2026.
The offense continued to put up big numbers, scoring nine runs on nine hits with five walks against the five Eagles (1-5) pitchers. Junior
Dillon Lopez (San Antonio) was 3-for-4 with a triple, driving in two runs and scoring two more, while junior
Ashton Beaird (San Antonio) was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. He was also hit by a pitch for the seventh time this year.
St. Mary's wasted no time, scoring four runs in the first inning. Beaird reached base after being hit by a pitch and later scored due to a wild pitch. Senior
Garrett Brooks (Spring Branch, Texas) drove in Beaird with a single before
Jacob King's (San Antonio) single brought Brooks home. Lopez added to the tally with an RBI triple, and
Ryan Alaniz (San Antonio) capped the scoring with a fielder's choice that allowed Lopez to score.
The second inning saw the Rattlers extend their lead to 6-0. Beaird singled and moved to third on
Jacob Tanguma's (Houston) double. Brooks grounded out, driving in Beaird, and Lopez's single scored Tanguma.
St. Mary's continued its momentum in the fourth inning, adding two more runs. King was hit by a pitch and stole second and third. Lopez walked and stole second, which set the stage for Alaniz, who singled through the left side to bring both King and Lopez home, increasing the lead to 8-0.
In the fifth inning, St. Mary's capitalized on a fielding error to add another run. Freshman
Blake Allen (Bulverde, Texas) walked and advanced on an error, allowing Beaird to single him home, making it 9-0.
The Eagles managed to score in the sixth inning when Trey Migl doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly, narrowing the deficit to 9-1. However, St. Mary's pitching shut down OC's offense in the final innings.
The Rattlers remain at home, hosting Lone Star Conference newcomer UT Dallas for a four-game series beginning on Friday at 6 p.m. The Comets are 5-1 after sweeping West Texas A&M this weekend.
