SAN ANTONIO – Despite strong pitching performances by both
Brandon Vasquez and
Joel Burgess, the St. Mary's University Baseball team suffered its first loss of the 2026 season with a 4-0 decision to UT Dallas.
Both teams are now 6-1 on the year and tied for first place in the Lone Star Conference standings.
Vasquez, a junior from Round Rock, Texas, allowed three unearned runs on five hits in five innings of work. He walked three and struck out five, while Burgess, a senior from Atascocita, Texas, pitched the final four frames, surrendering one run on seven hits with no walks and five strikeouts.
David Dean also pitched a gem for the Comets, allowing only three hits over seven innings. He walked four and struck out four. Gavin Hickman and Tag Pacot each pitched a scoreless inning in relief.
The four hits came by four different Rattlers, and senior
Raithen Malone (Mont Belvieu, Texas) had the team's only extra-base hit with a double down the left field line. Senior
Matt Mendez (Natalia, Texas) drew two of the six walks on the night.
The two teams return to the diamond on Saturday for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. and wrap up the series at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
