SAN ANTONIO — Due to some injuries in the preseason, the St. Mary's University Women's Tennis team had to forfeit at number three doubles and six singles in the season opener against Eastern Washington, dropping a 5-2 decision.
"The team made a ridiculous amount of unforced errors today," said Director of Tennis
Bill Macom. "When you average 20 per set, it's really difficult to win, and certainly brings any strategy to a screeching halt. There's no excuse to miss so many serves and returns. I really thought we prepared everyone pretty well this week to win the match, but I guess I was wrong. We just have to take a different practice approach moving forward, which means a lot of fundamental drills and maximizing our 20 hours per week more efficiently."
In doubles action, senior
Gia Posito (Houston) and junior
Selina Wu (San Gabriel, Calif.) fought back after dropping the first two games to win the next six for the victory on court one, but the Eagles (2-3) won the doubles point with a 6-0 win on court two and the forfeit at line three.
Posito and Wu were also victorious in singles action, as Posito won 6-3, 6-4 over Aneliss Amfirescu on court five and Wu gutted out a come-from-behind, 6-7 (1), 7-5, 1-0 [10-7], decision on court one.
The trio of freshmen at lines two through four combined to win nine games against the Division I opponent, with
Breeze Simon (Dallas) winning five of those nine (6-3, 6-2).
The Rattlers don't get long to rest, as they host McMurry on Friday at 2 p.m., and then will play both Howard Payne and Schreiner in Kerrville on Saturday.
