SAN ANTONIO – For the first time this season, five players from the St. Mary's University Men's Basketball team scored in double figures in a lopsided 82-56 win over UT Permian Basin.
The Rattlers (16-7, 9-6) never trailed, and
Olaverr Camacho (18 points),
Sebastian Mendoza (17),
Wayne Wiggins (13),
Justin Britt (12) and
Damani Claxton (11) all hit double digits in the scoring column.
Camacho, a senior from Barberena, Santa Rosa, Guatemala, tied for game-high honors with seven rebounds and his 18 points are a new career-high, surpassing the 17 he scored last Thursday at Texas A&M International. Mendoza, a graduate student from Riverside, Calif., scored a season-high 17 points, nailing all five of his three-point attempts on the night.
Britt (Goose Creek, S.C.) led the game with four steals, while Claxton (Bronx, N.Y.) dished out a game-high seven assists, which also ties his career-high. Wiggins (Mansfield, Texas) was the other Rattler to hit a shot from beyond the arc, as the Rattlers were 6-for-13 (46.2 percent).
The Rattlers' 61.8 field goal percentage is the highest of the season, and it is the first time this season the team has shot better than 60 percent from the floor. StMU also won the rebound battle, 31-to-24, and 50 of the team's 82 points came in the paint.
Sharrod Taylor led the Falcons (9-14, 5-10) in scoring with 13 points, while Tash Lunday tied for game-high honors in rebounds with seven. Both Rashad Kee (11) and TJ McKenzie (10) also scored in double digits.
St. Mary's remains at home for Senior Day on Saturday as they host Angelo State. The Rams dropped a 79-76 overtime decision at St. Edward's on Thursday.
