Women's Soccer Falters at #22 Colorado Mesa

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — The St. Mary's University Women's Soccer team ran into an offensive juggernaut in No. 22 Colorado Mesa on Saturday, dropping a 4-0 decision at Community Hospital Field.

The Mavericks (2-0) have scored four goals in each of their first two games of the season, finding the back of the net twice in each half against the Rattlers (0-1-1).

CMU outshot the Rattlers 11-to-10, with six shots on goal compared to four. They also took five corners and limited the Gold and Blue to two. StMU was whistled for only six fouls in the 90 minutes, half as many as the Mavs.

Three of the four goals for CMU came from bench players as Brooklyn Baird scored two, and Ellie Duncan scored one. Kylie Wells, one of the starters, scored the other.

Seven of the 10 shots for the Rattlers came off the feet of senior Shelby Paniagua (Cibolo, Texas) and junior Elena Kossler (Ötztal-Bahnhof, Austria), and two of Paniagua's three shots were on goal.

Both senior Haley Faucette (Burlington, N.C.) and redshirt freshman Quetza Garza (Dallas) spent 45 minutes in goal for the Rattlers. Each surrendered two goals, the first goals allowed this season by the defense.

The Rattlers open the home portion of the season on Saturday, Sept. 13, against East Central at 1 p.m. It is the final non-conference match of the year for StMU.
