Women's Soccer Wins Home Opener in Big Way

SAN ANTONIO — Playing at home for the first time in 2025, the St. Mary's University Women's Soccer team put on a scoring clinic, defeating East Central 5-1 on Saturday afternoon for its first win of the season. The Rattlers wrap up the non-conference portion of the schedule with a 1-1-1 record.

The five goals were scored by five different players, as senior Shelby Paniagua (Cibolo, Texas) started the action with a penalty kick in the seventh minute after junior Elena Kossler (Ötztal-Bahnhof, Austria) was fouled in the box.

Less than five minutes later, Paniagua flicked a pass ahead to junior forward Malia Dominguez (Helotes, Texas), who made a great move to bring the keeper out of the net and found the open space for the 2-0 lead.

In the 23rd minute, freshman Aryana Martinez (Mico, Texas) cut a pass from senior Ana Parra (San Antonio) from the right side of the box into the left lower section of the net for the final goal of the half.

Kossler was once again fouled inside the penalty box, this time by the goalkeeper in the 53rd minute, setting up a second PK, which she drilled into the net for the 4-0 advantage.

The Tigers (0-4-0) were able to score in the 60th minute on a header by Giselle Heck, who took a rebound off a shot by Melieah Hinnant that pinged off the crossbar.

Sophomore transfer Layla Rangel (San Antonio) scored a turnaround goal with her left foot on a pass from Martinez to cap the scoring in the 78th minute, and give the Rattlers a 5-1 victory.

St. Mary's controlled the pace of the game, outshooting the Tigers 35-to-7 and taking all seven corners on the afternoon. Senior goalkeeper Haley Faucette (Burlington, N.C.) made three saves, while redshirt freshman Quetza Garza (Dallas) saved another.

The Rattlers begin Lone Star Conference play on Wednesday, Sept. 17, at league newcomer UT Dallas. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
