SAN ANTONIO – St. Mary's University Director of Tennis
Bill Macom announced Tuesday the addition of
Dakota Fernandez as an assistant coach.
Fernandez will replace Angela Vargas, who left the Rattlers to become an Assistant Director of Tennis at the Orlando Tennis Academy.
"Dakota gained a lot of experience coaching at Texas State under the tutelage of Kendall Brooks, who highly recommended him," Macom said. "Coming from a competitive Division One program, I think he will help push our players to another level. He has already brought some really good ideas to the table that we're going to discuss further and incorporate into our practice plan. Our goal is to not only make nationals for both programs and maintain a top-four status in the region, but to develop the culture that's necessary to attain those goals. I'm looking forward to him joining our staff."
Fernandez spent two years at Texas State as a graduate assistant coach, spending time in all areas with the women's team, helping the Bobcats to a 16-6 record a season ago. He also had a four-month fellowship with the USTA in the Tennis Coaching and Leadership Program, receiving mentoring and professional engagement by the USTA staff and national-level coaches and mental skills specialists.
He played tennis at both Alcorn State and Mount St. Mary's, earning his bachelor's degree in entrepreneurship/business administration from Alcorn State in 2023. He graduated from Texas State in 2025 with his master's degree in exercise sport science with a strength & conditioning and sport coaching concentration.
