SAN ANTONIO — For the first time in over a month, the St. Mary's University Baseball team dropped both games on doubleheader day, falling 11-7 and 7-3 to Eastern New Mexico as the teams both battled high winds.
The Rattlers (22-15, 20-15) used 11 different pitchers through the two games, with
Carlos Flores Jr. (San Antonio) getting the loss in game one (2-1) and
Cole Brady (Nacogdoches, Texas) taking the loss in game two (1-2).
St. Mary's looks to earn a series split with the finale on Sunday. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
Game One Recap
St. Mary's scored its seven runs on seven hits. Junior
Garrett Brooks (Spring Branch, Texas) hit his fifth home run of the season in the five-run second inning, clearing the fence to the right of the blue monster in centerfield, for one of his three hits in the game. Senior
Tristan Moreno (Seguin, Texas) narrowly missed a home run of his own, hitting right below the yellow piping on the top of the fence in left center for a double, and senior Jake Elizondo (San Antonio) was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Junior
Kaleb Gauna (Hondo, Texas) started on the hill for the Gold and Blue, pitching 3 1/3 innings. He surrendered four runs on three hits, walking three, striking out two and hitting three batters.
Eastern New Mexico scored eight of the final nine runs in the game after the Rattlers had built a 6-3 lead in the bottom of the second.
Game Two Recap
As the storms rolled through southern Texas, the wind picked up drastically through the second game, and the two teams combined to hit five home runs over the final four innings.
The game started as a pitcher's duel as
Raithen Malone (Mont Belvieu, Texas) recorded the first hit of the game in the bottom of the third inning, and an
Easton Parrish (La Vernia, Texas) home run was the first run of the contest in the bottom of the fourth. Elizondo joined Parrish in the home run column with a two-run shot in the sixth, but the Rattlers were unable to plate anymore in the 7-3 loss.
Senior
Javier De Alejandro (San Antonio) had a solid outing, pitching five innings in a no decision. He gave up one run on two hits, walking four and striking out six to tie his season-high in K's.
Josaiah Estrella pitched a complete game for the Greyhounds, giving up three runs on five hits with one walk and two strikeouts to remain undefeated on the season (5-0).
