SAN ANTONIO — Three of the longest home runs seen in recent history at Dickson Stadium helped lead the St. Mary's University Baseball team to a 10-4 victory over Eastern New Mexico on Sunday to give the Rattlers a series split with the Greyhounds.
Junior
Garrett Brooks (Spring Branch, Texas), senior
Jacob Elizondo (San Antonio) and senior
Easton Parrish (La Vernia, Texas) all hit no-doubt homers, with Parrish's clearing the blue monster in centerfield.
Elizondo ended the game 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI, while Brooks was 2-for-3, drawing two walks, and junior
Raithen Malone (Mont Belvieu, Texas) added a 2-for-5 day at the plate.
Sophomore
Matthew Janecek (Houston) kept the potent ENMU offense in check, surrendering only one run on one hit with two strikeouts in getting the win out of the bullpen to improve to 2-1. Junior
Hagen Rose (Troy, Texas) started on the hill. He gave up three runs on six hits with two walks and six strikeouts. The pair also hit five batters but forced the Greyhounds into leaving nine runners on base.
The win improves St. Mary's to 23-15 on the season and 21-15 in Lone Star Conference play, while the Greyhounds hold a one-game lead over the Rattlers in the standings with records of 24-14 and 22-14.
The Rattlers scored six of their 10 runs in the second inning. With one out, senior
Trey Guajardo (San Juan, Texas) drew a four-pitch walk. Malone singled up the middle and junior
Matt Gauna (San Antonio) doubled to right center to score Guajardo. Junior
Matt Mendez (Natalia, Texas) singled to right center to score both runners. Moreno walked and Elizondo singled through the right side of the infield to score Mendez and put runners on the corners. Elizondo swiped second, and a walk to Brooks loaded the bases. After King drew two balls, the Greyhounds went to the bullpen, and he drove a ball to centerfield to score Moreno. Parrish hit a sacrifice fly for the sixth run of the frame.
The Greyhounds scored one in the third and two in the fourth to cut the Rattlers lead in half, 6-3. In the bottom of the fourth Elizondo scored on a wild pitch after singling up the middle, stealing second and moving to third on a flyout.
StMU tacked on two runs in the sixth on the monster home runs by Brooks and Parrish to stretch the lead back to six, 9-3. Each team scored one in the seventh, with the Rattlers coming on a blast to left by Elizondo for the 10-4 final score.
The Rattlers head to Oklahoma next week to take on Cameron for a four-game series. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 6 p.m. The Aggies will play a four-game set at Oklahoma Christian on Monday and Tuesday before hosting St. Mary's.
