TYLER, Texas — A tough defensive night for the St. Mary's University Baseball team helped No. 3 UT Tyler win the opening game of the four-game series on Friday, 13-3.
The Rattlers (28-19) committed a season-high seven errors on the night, leading to six unearned runs for the Patriots (38-9). StMU scored its three runs on 10 hits, while UTT plated 13 on 11 hits and both teams stranded nine runners on base.
Sophomore
Dillon Lopez (San Antonio) went 3-for-4 at the plate, driving in one of the three runs and scoring another, while senior
Hogan Heller (San Antonio) was 2-for-4.
Sophomore
Gabe Cook (San Antonio) took the loss on the hill to move to 3-6 on the year. He gave up three earned runs on six hits with two walks and a strikeout in 1 1/3 innings.
Derek Maples (San Antonio),
Brody Ticer (San Antonio),
Christian Molinar (San Antonio) and
Cole Brady (Nacogdoches, Texas) all worked in relief, with Maples and Ticer striking out three batters each.
Senior
Jacob Elizondo's (San Antonio) reached base streak ended at 16 games, as he was retired in all four plate appearances. The other eight in the lineup all reached base at least once.
The Rattlers and Patriots return to the diamond on Saturday for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
